Origin story
As the legend goes…
In 1987, Alan Krakower, a middle-aged Canadian marketing executive who uprooted his life and moved to Ibiza, was walking home one evening when he heard a voice that whispered, “It’s time to work.” Over the following eight days, he conceived of the Human Design system and called it the “science of differentiation.” Soon after, he changed his name to Ra Uru Hu and shared his teachings far and wide until his untimely death in 2011.
Did this sound like something out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? You bet. But when we looked under the hood at Alan’s—err, Ra’s—creation, it seemed pretty remarkable.
Human Design couples NASA planetary data with the Zodiac, the I Ching, and Eastern philosophy to generate a chart that explains how energy moves through our bodies, what types of people and opportunities are best for us, our strengths, our challenges, and so much more. It sits at the intersection of spirituality and practicality, offering a fun, mystical approach to living our most productive, connected lives.
1948–2011
What it’s made of
An unlikely synthesis.
A chart is calculated from your birth date, time, and place — no quiz, no self-report. The map it lands on borrows from four much older systems, each contributing a different layer.
Astrology
The planetary math. Your birth data becomes positions in the zodiac wheel — the same calculation an astrologer runs, done twice.
Kabbalah
The channels. The Tree of Life’s branching paths become the wiring that connects the chart’s centers.
I Ching
The gates. Its 64 hexagrams map one-to-one onto the chart’s 64 numbered traits — the ones the planets switch on.
Chakras
The centers. The traditional seven energy centers, expanded to the bodygraph’s nine.

Fair questions, straight answers.
Do I need my exact birth time?
Exact is best — type can flip with a few hours’ difference. If you don’t know it, check your birth certificate or ask family. If it’s truly lost, a rough time still produces a chart worth exploring; just hold the details more loosely.
Is Human Design scientifically proven?
No, and we won’t pretend otherwise. It’s a synthesis of older symbolic systems, not a peer-reviewed model. What we can say is that many people find it a surprisingly precise vocabulary for patterns they already recognize in themselves — and that’s the spirit we build for.
How is it different from astrology or MBTI?
It shares birth data with astrology but produces a different kind of map — mechanical rather than predictive. Unlike questionnaire systems such as MBTI, it isn’t based on self-report: two people can answer questions the same way and have very different charts.
Is it a religion? Do I have to believe in it?
No, and no. There’s nothing to join and nothing to worship. Use what’s useful, leave what isn’t.
